🔰 Beginner's Guide: A Complete Guide to Hokkaido Ski Equipment | Beginner's Skiing Preparation: How to Choose a Single-Board/Twin-Board Ski

🤔 Why do you need to understand the equipment when you first go skiing? 🎿

For beginners planning to go skiing in Hokkaido for the first time, one of the biggest questions is: What exactly do you need to bring for skiing?

Many people think they have to buy a complete set of equipment first, but then end up flying to Japan with a big bag full of stuff. Not only is it troublesome, but it could also cost you a lot of money. In fact, you don't need to be so nervous—skiing equipment can be easily divided into two main categories:

  • 🏂 Available for rental typesMost ski resorts or rental shops offer them; they are perfect for beginners and you don't have to rush to buy them.

  • 🧤 You must bring your own type of equipment. Not suitable for rental, or involving equipment for hygiene, comfort, and safety; it is recommended that you prepare the equipment yourself.

This time, I have compiled a complete list for you. "Newbie Ski Equipment Checklist"and will share it How to choose between a single board and a double board The key point. We hope it will help you avoid the common pitfalls new skiers encounter and easily experience Hokkaido's most dreamy powder snow fun!❄️

1. Rented equipment types 🎿

For first-time skiers, most equipment can be rented at the ski resorts; especially most Hokkaido ski resorts (such as Hutanai, Kiroro, Rutsudo, Sapporo International) have excellent rental services.

The following equipment is for beginners A loan is enough.:

1. Ski board (double-sided ski)⛷️ /Single board Snowboard🏂)
Double-sided boards are more stable and easier to learn to turn and slow down. If you are new to skiing, a double-sided board is usually a safer option.
Single board is a bit harder to learn than double board, but it’s highly enjoyable once you get the hang of it. If you want to look cool and take great photos, single board is a top choice for many people.

2. Bindings

  • The important parts connecting the snowshoes and snowboards were already installed by the store staff when I rented them.

  • No need for beginners to choose them specifically.

3. Ski poles (for dual-bladed skis only)
It is essential for snowboarders; it can help maintain balance. Single-board skiing is not necessary.

4. Snow boots
雪靴It is recommended to use with a snowboard (either a single or double board). When renting, staff will help adjust the fixed device. Beginners do not need to purchase one, as the size of the shoes is large and it is inconvenient to take them abroad.

  • Comfort determines the quality of the experience of the day.

  • What matters is "fitting well": it should not be too loose or squeeze the heel of the foot.

  • Lease tipsWhen trying on, put on your own ski socks and walk a few steps to make sure there are no pain points.

5. Ski wear (jacket + snow pants) 🧥👖
It is recommended to rent ski equipment because professional ski wear has waterproof, warm, and windproof features. If you don't have ski wear, it is not recommended to use ordinary down jackets, as they easily absorb snow and get wet.

  • Lease tipsSki pants should not be too tight; comfort is the main consideration. Ski pants: Can be deepKneel down to test whether it fits properly.

6. Helmet 🪖
Beginners strongly recommend wearing them; safety first.Safer than just wearing a hatMost ski resorts offer helmet rentals; they are inexpensive (some even offer free rentals), so be sure to wear them.
Note: Snoway Academy courses require that students mustWear it for class.

  • Lease tipsLike a bicycle helmet, it should fit your head shape. The strap should fit snugly around your chin. Ski helmets usually have BOA adjustment on the back to adjust the size.

7. Snow goggles (Goggles)

  • Snow mirrors can be rented (depending on the ski resort), but they are prone to scratches, fog, or hygiene concerns.

  • Snow mirrors can prevent snow blindness and protect your eyes. Be sure to rent one.

  • Small reminderIf you plan to ski frequently in the future, a snow mirror is a must-have first piece of equipment.

2.🎒 You must bring your own necessary equipment (for comfort and hygiene)

While some equipment may be available for rent at ski resorts, for reasons of "hygiene," they may not be available for rent at all, and must be purchased or prepared by the user.

1. Moisture-wicking underwear (Base Layer)

  • Ski resort activity levels are high, and beginners fall more often, which will inevitably lead to sweating.

  • Cotton clothes absorb water, resulting in a cold sensation throughout the body.

  • RecommendationChoose quick-drying materials, such as UNIQLO HEATTECH or warm underwear from athletic brands.

2. Mid-layer thermal clothing (Mid Layer)

  • The onion-style outfit is the most practical: jacket + inner layer + underwear.

  • The middle layer can be a brushed sweater or a down vest, adjusted according to the temperature.

  • RecommendationThe middle layer is decided based on weather conditions; it is not required every day.
You can buy it at UNIQLO or Workman, and it’s affordable.

3. Snow socks

  • Make sure to wear “long-sleeved” + “quick-drying material” snow socks.

  • Too thick will squeeze the feet, and too thin will easily wear out the feet.

  • Kind reminderDon't wear two layers of socks; it's more likely to wear out.

4. Waterproof gloves

  • Don't ever use woolen gloves; they turn into ice cubes as soon as they get wet with snow.

  • Having your own gloves is more hygienic, especially when you sweat a lot in winter.

  • Kind reminderIt is recommended to wear the inner gloves at the same time; warmth is the first priority.

5. Protective gear (especially recommended for beginners)

  • Anti-fall pantsA must-have for beginners on a skateboard; it reduces the number of falls and the pain in the butt.

  • Arm and knee guardsLower the risk of injury.

  • These types of equipment are usually difficult to rent, so it is recommended to prepare them yourself.

  • Kind reminderDon't buy impact-resistant pants that are too thick (over 10mm!). That's why many students can't stand up for this reason.
It is recommended to buy high-quality and relatively thin ones to maintain comfort.

6. Neck warmer/neck wrapMask (Balaclava)

  • The Hokkaido-style wind is strong, and the wind speed is even stronger when descending.

  • The neck warmer can protect against wind and keep you warm, while also preventing cold air from entering your jacket.

  • When the air temperature drops below -10°C, the face can easily freeze.

  • The mask provides comprehensive protection and is a lifesaver for those who are afraid of the cold.

🤔 Three-board🏂 vs. Double-board⛷️: Which one should I choose?

Many people will wonder for the first time, "Should I play a single board or a double board?"

  • ⛷️ Double boardQuick to learn, easy to control speed, and relatively stable; suitable for beginners with no experience, allowing you to quickly experience the fun of skiing.

  • 🏂 Single boardOne word: Cool! It takes more time to learn than double-sided boards, but it’s easier to get started (like 1-2 days to learn the basics). If you have experience with board sports, you’ll learn faster.

👉 Our recommendation: For first-time skiers, if you don't have any particular preferences, you can start with the following: Double board Start with snowboarding. Once you get used to the feeling, try snowboarding on your own. Happiness is the most important thing!

❄️ 4. Common questions for beginners FAQ

Q1. Do I need to wear a helmet when skiing for the first time?
👉 Yes, especially for beginners. The head is the most vulnerable part when falling. It is recommended to wear a hat. It is recommended to put the hat in your pocket when taking photos; it looks more stylish that way!

Q2. Can I wear jeans to ski? 👖
👉 Not recommended! Jeans get wet and frozen quickly when it rains, which is very uncomfortable. You must wear waterproof snow pants.

Q3. Does the child need to prepare anything specifically? 🧒
👉 It is even more important for little ones to stay warm; they need to have a warm mitten or neck warmer, and ensure that the gloves do not easily fall off (we recommend choosing a mitten-style or long-sleeved model).
Also remember to prepare children's snow goggles to prevent snow blindness.

Q4: Which Hokkaido ski resort is suitable for beginners?
👉 Sapporo Handai (convenient transportation), Aomoriyama (city night view), KIRORO (good snow quality), Rutsudo (complete family facilities), Sapporo International (Japanese team).
