Rusutsu Ski Guide 2026–2027: Plan Your Snow Adventure

Snow-covered mountains and trees in winter

Dreaming of adding Rusutsu to your Hokkaido trip? Give yourself time to enjoy it. For your first day on snow, we recommend a full-day lesson with room to learn, rest and settle into your gear. Here is our guide to lessons at East Mt., transport, accommodation and equipment.

Checked on 25 September 2026. Transport and prices for winter 2026–2027 may change; check the latest official updates.

Is Rusutsu suitable for beginners?

Yes, Rusutsu can work for first-timers. But not every part of the resort suits a complete beginner. Start with basic control rather than trying to explore the whole mountain on day one.

Why do first-time lessons start at East Mt.? Under Rusutsu’s arrangements for partner schools, Snoway’s first-time lessons must begin at East Mt. Take your time getting used to the equipment and follow your instructor step by step.

Advanced lessons take place at Mt. Isola. Your instructor chooses routes to suit your ability and the day’s conditions—not a summit checklist. Browse the official trail map for the layout, and follow your lesson confirmation for meeting details.

Travelling with children? Allow time to get comfortable in the snow and take breaks. If adults and children have very different abilities, ask about separate groups before booking.

Three things to consider before booking

  1. A first taste or a chance to progress? Choose a suitable lesson for an introduction. To build confidence with stopping and turning, leave room for several days of practice.
  2. Similar abilities in your group? Tell us whether everyone has taken lessons and can stop or turn independently. Include children’s ages, ski or snowboard choice and language needs.
  3. How much time and energy do you have? Include travel, rentals, lunch and breaks. Arriving at the resort is not the same as being ready to start a lesson.

Day trip from Sapporo or stay in Rusutsu?

Staying in Sapporo

A day trip may fit your plans, but check bus times before booking lessons. Allow time for rentals, changing and reaching the meeting point—and leave a buffer for your return bus.

Staying in Rusutsu

A local stay gives families and multi-day learners more time to rest and practise. Check access to rentals and the meeting point, plus luggage storage after checkout. Not every property is ski-in/ski-out.

Winter 2026–2027: Sapporo bus changes

Check Rusutsu-Go for Sapporo and BIGRUNS for New Chitose Airport. Official guidance lists a journey of around 120 minutes; winter roads can add delays.

Important change this winter: The resort has announced that the winter Sapporo–Rusutsu bus will become a paid service from 28 November 2026. Fares and booking details were still pending when we checked. Older guides describing a free bus are no longer reliable for this season.

Check boarding points and luggage rules too. On arrival day, allow time for immigration, baggage and transfers rather than rushing straight into a lesson.

Budget beyond your lesson

Budget separately for lessons, lift passes, equipment and clothing rental, transport, accommodation and meals. Check your own travel and winter-sports insurance; school liability cover is not a substitute.

Snoway’s Rusutsu lesson fees exclude lift passes, rentals, transport and meals. Pass and rental prices depend on dates, ages and equipment. For current lesson rates, see the Rusutsu pricing table rather than comparing prices from different seasons.

Lift passes & rentals: plan ahead

List what you need: skis or a snowboard, boots, outerwear and a helmet. Check what each rental package includes; do not assume gloves or goggles are supplied.

Uncomfortable boots? Ask rental staff to check the fit before your lesson. Have heights and shoe sizes ready, and confirm any other information the rental shop needs.

Choose a lift pass that suits your lesson plan. If unsure, ask us before buying at the resort’s published rates.

Half day or full day? Give yourself time

We recommend full-day lessons for beginners and families. Getting used to boots, equipment and basic movements takes time. Three hours can feel rushed; a full day gives you more room to practise and rest.

What does “5+1” or “6+1” mean? Five or six hours of teaching plus a one-hour lunch break. Choose around your energy, children’s routine and transport. Three-hour lessons remain available, but are not our first choice for beginners and do not guarantee independent riding afterwards.

Tell us each participant’s age, experience, ski or snowboard choice and preferred language. Mandarin, Cantonese and English depend on availability. Ask about separate groups for different disciplines or widely differing abilities.

What will you learn with Snoway?

Our private ski and snowboard lessons focus on beginners, developing riders and families. Each lesson adapts to your ability, goals and the day’s conditions.

  • First time: Get familiar with equipment, moving on flat snow, getting up and basic stopping, with control and safety first.
  • Some experience: Tell us what feels difficult—turning or speed control, for example—so your instructor can focus your practice.
  • Families: We work around children’s ages and energy. Ask about separate groups if abilities vary significantly.

Request Mandarin, Cantonese or English, subject to instructor availability. Our team receives internal training led by Level 3 instructors; this does not mean every lesson is taught by a Level 3 instructor. Meet our instructor team to see individual qualifications.

Ready for more? Freeride & instructor training

Already have the basics? Ask Snoway about advanced training. Tell us where you are now and what you want to improve—we can then discuss a suitable plan.

Freeride-focused training

Share your riding experience, the conditions you have tried and your goals. Our team can assess suitable coaching options. Advanced Rusutsu lessons take place at Mt. Isola, with routes chosen around ability, conditions and resort rules.

Our tip:Freeride does not mean access to closed terrain or an off-resort backcountry guiding trip. Confirm suitability, permitted terrain and equipment requirements before booking.

Instructor training: learn to teach

Considering becoming an instructor, or developing your teaching? Tell us your current level, qualifications and training goals. If preparing for certification, include your target level so we can discuss suitable training and availability.

Interested in CASI snowboard instructor certification? Explore our CASI Prep Course. Preparation and the official exam are separate. Confirm entry requirements, exam arrangements and whether training can take place in Rusutsu. Training does not guarantee a pass.

Your lesson-day checklist

  • The night before: Check meeting details, lesson time, contacts and transport in your confirmation email. Missing something? Message us.
  • Before leaving: Prepare suitable clothing, gloves and goggles, and confirm your rentals. See our beginner equipment checklist.
  • On arrival: Allow time for rentals, fitting and changing. If you need your instructor to help with rentals, this time counts towards your lesson.
  • After the lesson: Leave time to return equipment and collect your bags before travelling back.

Rusutsu FAQs

Will I need to use a lift on my first day?

Not necessarily. Start with basic control; your instructor will assess the next steps. Ask which lift pass suits your lesson before purchasing.

Can our family learn together?

Share group size, ages, disciplines and abilities. If some are complete beginners and others can already turn, separate groups may work better.

Can I take a morning lesson from Sapporo?

It depends on the seasonal transport schedule. Include rental and changing time. Send us your travel plans if you would like help checking the timing.

Where can I check qualifications and book?

Meet the Snoway Academy team, then visit our Rusutsu lesson page for prices and booking details. Requests for a particular instructor or language require confirmation.

Plan your travel, then choose your lesson pace. Leave room to learn and rest without rushing.
