The right starting terrain and an instructor who adapts to your progress make the difference.

Step 1: Flat and gentle terrain outside Mountain Center

Snoway Academy usually starts first-timers outside Mountain Center to practise equipment handling, movement and basic control. Skiing and snowboarding use different techniques, but both begin with learning to stop and stay in control.

Step 2: Move to Family when ready

Once control and confidence develop, your instructor may move to Family. In our experience, its gentle pitch helps beginner skiers and snowboarders link their new skills without an overwhelming first challenge.

The official map lists Family as a 250-metre beginner run. See theofficial trail mapfor its location. Your instructor chooses when and where to practise based on ability, snow conditions and open terrain.

Our tip:A beginner-rated run is not a signal for first-timers to ski alone. Everyone progresses differently; reliable stopping and control come first.

Family lessons: learn together or split up?

Sharing the experience is lovely, but one family does not always mean one suitable lesson group. Children and adults differ in stamina, learning pace and tolerance for cold. Build the lesson around the people.

Similar ability:Learning together makes encouragement easier and reduces waiting.

Different levels:If parents can already turn but children are complete beginners, ask about separate groups.

Different disciplines:Skiing and snowboarding are not combined in one private lesson. Arrange separate groups if needed.

Age and individual needs:Tell us each child’s age, experience and support needs before booking. Suitability should not be judged by height alone.

Choosing skis or a snowboard? Consider your child’s interests, experience and family plans, then speak with the instructor. The best first-day outcome is wanting to try again.

Explore family ski and snowboard lessons →

When should you visit Kiroro? Is one day enough?

Do not choose dates only for deep powder. Consider transport, accommodation costs, the children’s comfort in cold weather and how many days you want to learn. For season dates and lift operations, checkKiroro’s latest official updates.

Fresh snow is not always easier for beginners to walk or turn in. Wind and visibility also matter. Suitable terrain is more important than chasing a particular snow condition.

One day: leave room to enjoy it

Spend the morning getting comfortable and learning basics, take a lunch break, then practise at your own pace. Avoid squeezing lessons, sightseeing and a long evening journey into one day. Rentals and changing take time.

Two or three days: give your skills time to settle

Build basic control on day one, review and practise on day two, then consolidate or explore suitable runs on day three. This is a planning idea, not a progression guarantee. Families may appreciate a rest day, hot spring or town visit between ski days.

Getting to Kiroro from Sapporo and Otaru

There is no direct JR train to Kiroro. Choose your base, check both outward and return travel, then book your lesson time.

Travel option

Best suited to

Check before booking

Bus from Sapporo

City-based trips with one or more ski days

Service dates, pickup point, arrival and return times, and compatibility with a full lesson

Bus from Otaru

Combining Otaru sightseeing with skiing

Operating dates, reservations and the return service—not just the outward journey

JR train + pre-booked taxi

An alternative transfer option

The official route uses Otaru-Chikko Station. These are operating periods, not confirmation that every service fits your lesson. Check times, seats and fares in theofficial winter transport information.

Allow time at the resort:After arriving, you still need to collect equipment, fit boots, change, use the bathroom and reach the meeting point. Bus arrival is not lesson start time. Allow time after class to return gear and catch your bus. Pre-book return taxis rather than expecting one to be available.

We would avoid scheduling your first lesson tightly around an airport arrival, transfers and check-in. Flight or snowy-road delays can quickly turn an exciting day into a rush.

Stay at Kiroro, Sapporo or Otaru?

Several ski days or travelling with children:Staying near the resort reduces daily travel, but check the transfer and distance to your meeting point. One ski day with more city sightseeing:Sapporo or Otaru may suit your trip better, provided transport matches your lesson.

Club Med Kiroro Grand:A family-oriented resort option. Our lessons are separate from hotel packages, so check for overlap before booking.

Otaru hotels + bus and lift-pass packages

You do not have to stay at Kiroro to enjoy skiing there. Otaru can offer lower room rates and easy access to restaurants and canal walks after skiing. Compare the same dates and room or meal plans, as savings vary.

For transport, look out for theOtaru–Kiroro return bus + six-hour lift-pass package. Bundling transport and lift access may help your budget, but it does not mean your hotel includes transport or that a package is always cheaper. Check adult and child fares, both journeys, pass conditions and refunds.

As of 25 September 2026, theofficial winter transport pagelists the 2026–2027 Otaru bus and six-hour lift-pass package, with details still marked Coming Soon. Once prices are released, compare the total cost of accommodation, transport, passes, rentals and lessons. Allow time after class to return equipment and catch your bus.

Rentals, lift passes and Mountain Center

Mountain Center’s first floor has equipment rentals, changing rooms, lockers and a nursing room. Check opening hours and arrangements in theofficial facilities guide. The nursing room is not a childcare service; children not taking lessons still need supervision.

Where do Snoway Academy lessons meet?

the trail-map board outside Mountain Center’s ski-area exitis Kiroro’s designated meeting point for registered operators. Snoway Academy follows these requirements. Please finish rentals and changing before arriving; do not wait in a hotel lobby or guest room instead.

We will create a Line/WhatsApp group before your lesson so you can contact your instructor and confirm meeting details. Your instructor will then choose the day’s practice area.

Equipment rental: take time to get the fit right

Well-fitting boots make a real difference. Allow time to try them on and ask rental staff to adjust anything painfully tight or loose at the heel. Check children’s sizes, availability and included items ahead of time. Do not assume gloves, goggles or all clothing are included.

Waterproof ski jacket and trousers, suitable warm layers and ski socks.

Waterproof gloves, goggles and a helmet—check which items you need to bring or rent.

Sunscreen, lip balm and water; spare dry gloves are useful for children.

Keep your phone warm and store booking and contact details in advance.

Which lift pass? Check your lesson needs first

Lift passes are not included in private lesson prices. Beginners may start on flat ground, with lift use depending on progress. Ask the school which ticket suits your lesson and check current resort rules before buying.

Choosing a lesson: allow a full day if possible

A half-day lesson is possible, but three hours can feel short once beginners have adjusted to equipment, practised and rested. If your schedule allows,we recommend a full day for first-timers and families. It gives you a more relaxed learning pace, with breaks based on stamina—not nonstop skiing.

Snoway Academy offers private ski and snowboard lessons in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, subject to instructor availability. The 5+1 option includes five teaching hours and a one-hour lunch break (9:00–15:00); 6+1 includes six teaching hours plus lunch (9:00–16:00). Snoway Academy normally begins on flat and gentle terrain outside Mountain Center, moving to Family as skills develop. A beginner rating alone does not mean you are ready for a run.

Must adults and children take separate lessons?

Not always. Age, ability, discipline and stamina matter. Ask about separate groups if needs differ substantially, and share everyone’s details before booking.

Can I take a lesson on a day trip from Sapporo?

Check seasonal buses or pre-booked transfers. Both arrival and departure must fit your lesson, with extra time for preparation at the resort—not just the drive itself.

Can one instructor teach skiing and snowboarding to our family?

One private lesson does not mix skiing and snowboarding. Ask about separate groups; prices depend on the arrangement.

Are rentals and lift passes included?

No. Snoway Academy private lesson prices cover tuition. Allow separately for equipment, lift passes, transport and meals.

Do I need private lessons if my Club Med package includes lessons?

First check the included language, group format and age requirements.
